2:34 2:38 barges of air strikes today hitting 320
2:38 2:41 Targets in Gaza in the last 24 hours and
2:41 2:42 tonight former president Obama putting
2:42 2:44 out a lengthy statement affirming
2:44 2:46 Israel's right to self-defense but also
2:46 2:49 warning quote any Israeli military
2:49 2:51 strategy that ignores the human costs
2:51 2:54 could ultimately backfire but we want to
2:54 2:55 begin tonight with a terrifying
2:55 2:58 situation here at home in the skies an
2:58 3:01 off duty AAS Airlines pilot is facing
3:01 3:03 charges of attempted murder after
3:03 3:05 allegedly trying to shut down the
3:05 3:08 plane's engines mid-flight the flight
3:08 3:10 from Everett Washington to San Francisco
3:10 3:13 landed safely in Portland Oregon cbs's
3:13 3:15 Chris Van Cleave starts us off with how
3:15 3:18 close the plane came to
3:18 3:20 disaster we've got the uh guy that tried
3:20 3:22 to shut the engines down uh out of the

3:27 3:29 with 84 people on board including
3:29 3:32 infants riding in their parents' laps
3:32 3:34 police say 44-year-old Joseph Emerson an
3:34 3:37 off-duty Alaska pilot riding in the
3:37 3:39 cockpit jump seat allegedly attempted to
3:39 3:41 turn off the plane's engines at about
3:41 3:44 31,000 ft there are reports he may have
3:44 3:47 tried to pull these red engine fire
3:47 3:49 suppression handles we W long course
3:49 3:51 soon as we get on the ground and park
3:51 3:53 Emerson was handcuffed in the back of
3:53 3:55 the plane as Pilots made an emergency
3:55 3:56 landing in Portland there were no
3:56 3:58 injuries it seems like he settled down
3:58 4:02 as soon as he uh after one moment of
4:02 4:04 going uh a little bit overboard
4:04 4:06 passenger Jessica Vil tweeted I was on
4:06 4:09 this flight last night with my two kids
4:09 4:11 thank God everyone is okay retired
4:11 4:13 airline pilot and former NTSB chair
4:13 4:16 Robert sewalt if I'm in a cockpit jump
4:16 4:19 seat how hard would it be to access
4:19 4:21 engine controls all he or she would have
4:21 4:23 to do is just reach up and and grab
4:23 4:25 something to be able to uh to turn the
4:25 4:28 engines off CBS News obtained this alert
4:28 4:30 the FAA sent to Airlines about the
4:30 4:32 incident noting it is not connected in
4:32 4:34 any way shape or form to current world
4:34 4:37 events and law enforcement sources say
4:37 4:38 there does not appear to be a connection
4:38 4:41 to terrorism Emerson is a married father
4:41 4:43 of two from the Bay Area who is seen
4:43 4:45 visiting sick kids in the hospital in
4:45 4:48 photos posted to
4:48 4:50 Facebook tonight the FBI and local
4:50 4:53 police are still investigating but so
4:53 4:55 far no clear motive Emerson is behind
4:55 4:57 bars expected in court tomorrow
4:57 5:00 afternoon to face those
5:00 5:03 167 criminal charges Nora a frightening
5:03 5:06 story Chris Van Cleave thank you so much
5:06 5:08 we turn now to today's other top story
5:08 5:10 the release of two more hostages by
5:10 5:12 Hamas tonight Israel is also issuing
5:12 5:14 issuing a new warning to civilians to
5:14 5:17 evacuate Northern Gaza another sign of a
5:17 5:20 ground Invasion maybe imminent we're
5:20 5:21 also learning tonight that a top Marine
5:21 5:23 General is now advising Israel's
5:23 5:25 military cbs's Charlie Daga reports
5:25 5:27 tonight from Tel
5:27 5:30 Aviv out of captivity tonight
5:30 5:35 85-year-old Yos livshits 79-year-old nit
5:35 5:38 Cooper their husbands are still thought
5:38 5:41 to be in the hands of Hamas okay ahead
5:41 5:44 of their release yosh's grandson spoke
5:44 5:46 of his grandparents kindness my
5:46 5:48 grandfather and grandmother were taking
5:48 5:51 the sick people from Gaza strep who
5:51 5:54 cannot take get their uh treatment there
5:54 5:58 to Israeli hospitals it comes as Israeli
5:58 6:01 forces launched a ferocious new assault
6:01 6:04 across Gaza hundreds of explosions in
6:04 6:07 some of the heaviest bombardments Gaza
6:07 6:10 has seen in two weeks of Israeli air
6:10 6:13 strikes ahead of an expected ground
6:13 6:15 offensive us officials warn of an
6:15 6:18 escalation of violence across the region
6:18 6:20 especially from Iranian backed groups
6:20 6:24 like Hezbollah in Lebanon cbs's Deborah
6:24 6:27 p is in Northern Israel we just arrived
6:27 6:30 in the borderon of kiria man to film The
6:30 6:33 evacuation of residents when we were
6:33 6:36 ducking for
6:36 6:39 cover the air raid sirens were followed
6:39 6:42 within seconds by a loud
6:42 6:44 blast what you've just been hearing is
6:44 6:48 exactly why authorities one the last few
6:48 6:50 thousand people left in this town to
6:50 6:53 evacuate to safety less than a mile from
6:53 6:56 here this house had been hit by a mortar
6:56 7:00 inside a mother and her young children
7:00 7:02 the crossfire between Israel and
7:02 7:04 lebanon's Iranian backed Hezbollah has
7:04 7:07 picked up over the past two weeks amid
7:07 7:10 growing fears it could kickart a
7:10 7:13 regional
7:13 7:16 conflict back in Gaza the death toll is
7:16 7:19 now soared to more than 5,000 Hamas says
7:19 7:22 with thousands of children among the
7:22 7:25 Dead amid growing International
7:25 7:27 condemnation of the civilian deaths the
7:27 7:30 Israeli military released graphic video
7:30 7:32 of the massacre that unfolded here just
7:32 7:36 over 2 weeks ago dash cam video said to
7:36 7:39 be from a civilian car shows gunmen
7:39 7:41 approaching the car and opening
7:41 7:44 fire a body cam recovered from one of
7:44 7:48 the attackers shows a hail of
7:48 7:51 gunfire the bodies of the two victims
7:51 7:54 slumped over shot
7:54 7:57 dead in recent days Israeli Commandos
7:57 7:59 have mounted raids into Gaza to to
7:59 8:01 attack targets and try to find out
8:01 8:05 information about more than 220 hostages
8:05 8:07 still held
8:07 8:10 captive the release of two more hostages
8:10 8:12 tonight will come as a relief for their
8:12 8:15 families but to Hamas it may serve as a
8:15 8:18 stalling tactic to slow down Israel's
8:18 8:21 allout
8:21 8:23 Invasion as was the case when the
8:23 8:26 American hostages were released just a
8:26 8:27 couple of days ago there was a brief
8:27 8:29 lull in air strikes today colleagues in
8:29 8:32 Gaza tell us but we're also hearing
8:32 8:34 tonight of a possible strike on the ALS
8:34 8:37 Shati refugee camp killing a number of
8:37 8:39 civilians that's according to the Hamas
8:39 8:43 Health Ministry Nora Charlie Daga thank
8:43 8:45 you also new today a third Convoy of
8:45 8:47 trucks carrying much needed Aid was
8:47 8:49 allowed into Gaza but experts say it's
8:49 8:51 still not enough to stem the growing
8:51 8:55 humanitarian crisis CBS MTZ tab reports
8:55 8:57 from East Jerusalem that Israel launched
8:57 9:00 a rare air strike on a Hamas Lo Target
9:00 9:03 in the West
9:03 9:06 Bank the destruction here is near total
9:06 9:08 the Israeli military said it targeted
9:08 9:10 the al-ansar Moss because Hamas was
9:10 9:14 using it as a quote terrorist compound
9:14 9:17 this is just the second time in 20 years
9:17 9:19 that Israel has carried out an air
9:19 9:22 strike in the occupied West Bank and the
9:22 9:25 fear now is that more is to come in the
9:25 9:28 apartment next door the force of the air
9:28 9:30 strike the Israeli the media says was
9:30 9:32 from a fighter jet was so powerful it
9:32 9:35 blew a hole through the joining
9:35 9:37 wall it's a place of worship he says
9:37 9:40 like a church or a synagogue not a place
9:40 9:41 for
9:41 9:43 Fighters anger is only growing across
9:43 9:46 the West Bank where 95 Palestinians have
9:46 9:47 been killed according to the Palestinian
9:47 9:50 Ministry of Health and more than 800
9:50 9:51 have been arrested since the War Began
9:51 9:53 more than two weeks ago since the
9:53 9:56 Israeli military but it's in Gaza where
9:56 9:58 the death toll continues to spiral at a
9:58 10:01 speed never seen before although the
10:01 10:02 desperately needed convoys of
10:02 10:04 humanitarian Aid have started making
10:04 10:06 their way in from Egypt after a deal was
10:06 10:09 reached between the US and Israel Each
10:09 10:11 truck carries food for only around 4,000
10:11 10:14 people according to the wfp nowhere near
10:14 10:16 enough for gaza's population of more
10:16 10:19 than 2 million as fears continue to grow
10:19 10:21 for the safety of the up to 600
10:21 10:24 Americans still trapped inside Gaza like
10:24 10:26 Emily renberger and her five children
10:26 10:28 who went there to visit her husband's
10:28 10:31 mother they're very scared they just
10:31 10:33 have lots of questions that are hard to
10:33 10:35 answer uh like when can we leave or why
10:35 10:39 is this you know why why is it you know
10:39 10:41 why is all the bombardment happening um
10:41 10:44 to
10:44 10:46 everybody now renberger says she feels
10:46 10:49 Left Behind As Americans in Israel are
10:49 10:51 evacuated home by the state department
10:51 10:52 while she and her children remain
10:52 10:55 trapped in Gaza as the violence their
10:55 11:00 only intensifies Nora MTS t thank you a
11:00 11:02 warning tonight from a senior defense
11:02 11:04 official to CBS News there is potential
11:04 11:07 for significant escalation against US
11:07 11:10 forces in Iraq and Syria and it comes as
11:10 11:12 Western leaders behind the scenes are
11:12 11:14 asking Israel to delay their ground
11:14 11:15 invasion in hopes of getting more
11:15 11:18 hostages out here's cbs's Nancy
11:18 11:22 Cordes it's delicate diplomacy privately
11:22 11:24 the White House is urging Israeli
11:24 11:26 officials to hold off on a ground
11:26 11:29 invasion of Gaza while publicly you us
11:29 11:31 officials say it's up to Israel not
11:31 11:33 dictating military terms to the Israeli
11:33 11:36 Defense Forces waiting would give the US
11:36 11:39 and Israel more time to negotiate the
11:39 11:41 release of hostages including at least
11:41 11:44 10 Americans who are unaccounted for
11:44 11:46 should
11:46 11:49 have waiting would also give neighboring
11:49 11:52 Egypt more time to deliver food water
11:52 11:55 and medicine to innocent Palestinians
11:55 11:58 you view humanitarian Aid getting their
11:58 12:01 first first as important whether or not
12:01 12:03 there's a ground Invasion we believe
12:03 12:05 that humanitarian assistance flowing to
12:05 12:06 the people of Gaza is critically
12:06 12:09 important and it needs to go as soon as
12:09 12:11 possible and as much as possible a delay
12:11 12:14 would also buy time for more US troops
12:14 12:17 to move into position as American bases
12:17 12:19 in the region increasingly come under
12:19 12:23 Fire from suspected iran-backed militias
12:23 12:25 just today the Pentagon announced the
12:25 12:28 10th such attack in the past week drone
12:28 12:31 strikes on on two US bases in Syria the
12:31 12:34 Pentagon already has about 10 ships in
12:34 12:36 the region with roughly 9,000 Sailors
12:36 12:39 and Marines on board and another
12:39 12:41 aircraft carrier strike group with about
12:41 12:44 6,000 troops on board was ordered to the
12:44 12:46 Persian Gulf this weekend in an effort
12:46 12:49 to further deter
12:49 12:51 Iran and Nancy ctis joins us from the
12:51 12:53 White House Nancy we took note today
12:53 12:56 that former president Barack Obama is
12:56 12:58 weighing in publicly with a serious
12:58 13:01 warning for Israel what did he say what
13:01 13:02 do you think it means yes and perhaps
13:02 13:05 speaking more bluntly Norah about an
13:05 13:07 ally than a current president could Mr
13:07 13:09 Obama wrote that Israel's military
13:09 13:12 strategy could backfire if it doesn't do
13:12 13:15 more to minimize civilian casualties and
13:15 13:17 he wrote that the Israeli government's
13:17 13:19 decision to cut off food water and
13:19 13:21 electricity to a captive civilian
13:21 13:24 population could further Harden
13:24 13:26 Palestinian attitudes for generations
13:26 13:29 and erode Global support report for
13:29 13:32 Israel and he said this message needs to
13:32 13:35 be delivered loud and clear to Israel by
13:35 13:38 the US Nora Nancy ctis at the White
13:38 13:41 House thank you International efforts
13:41 13:42 continue around the clock to free the
13:42 13:46 remaining hostages in Gaza cbs's Holly
13:46 13:48 Williams tonight speaks to the relatives
13:48 13:50 of Judith renan and her 17-year-old
13:50 13:52 daughter Natalie those were the two
13:52 13:54 Americans that were released on
13:54 13:57 Friday when you first saw those images
13:57 13:59 the videos the photograph of them
13:59 14:02 released what was that feeling like
14:02 14:05 overwhelming it's disbelief and it's
14:05 14:08 relief at the at the same time and it's
14:08 14:13 all the emotions all at once because um
14:13 14:15 being happy is a privilege that we do
14:15 14:17 not have right now you have eight family
14:17 14:20 members who are still missing you say
14:20 14:22 that the Israeli government has
14:22 14:24 confirmed that they're being held as
14:24 14:26 hostages how do you think they they
14:26 14:29 might be being treated right now
14:29 14:32 those thoughts come and I shake them
14:32 14:34 away because I can't allow myself to
14:34 14:35 break we have to stay strong we have to
14:35 14:39 keep going full force until they are all
14:39 14:41 released and back
14:41 14:43 home while the US is advising Israel to
14:43 14:46 delay its fullblown ground Invasion the
14:46 14:49 military we've learned is conducting
14:49 14:52 some limited ground raids into Gaza CBS
14:52 14:54 morning's co-host Tony deople sat down
14:54 14:56 with Israel's Chief military
14:56 14:58 spokesperson to talk about its dual
14:58 15:01 Mission rescue the hostages and
15:01 15:03 eliminate
15:03 15:06 Hamas as Israeli air strikes pound
15:06 15:10 targets inside Gaza rear Admiral Daniel
15:10 15:13 Hagar's job is to explain the aftermath
15:13 15:16 when these pictures every day of women
15:16 15:17 and children in the
15:17 15:21 rubble that doesn't help your cause this
15:21 15:25 is a tough fight but uh it shows the
15:25 15:29 face of Kamas using the cousins is human
15:29 15:32 shield Israel's Chief military
15:32 15:35 spokesperson says the war has two goals
15:35 15:40 one is to destroy Hamas leaders
15:40 15:43 infrastructures and the other goal is to
15:43 15:45 release the
15:45 15:48 hostages but for the families of the
15:48 15:51 more than 200 people still held by Hamas
15:51 15:54 hagari had little Comfort can you at
15:54 15:57 least tell them tonight that they are
15:57 16:00 alive and that they are not being
16:00 16:03 mistreated I cannot tell them that we're
16:03 16:06 in a war and our goal is to bring
16:06 16:08 everybody home as long as it takes that
16:08 16:11 commitment to fight comes from evidence
16:11 16:14 like this he says a note newly recovered
16:14 16:17 off the body of a Hamas attacker this is
16:17 16:19 what it says the
16:19 16:21 enemy is a
16:21 16:24 disease that has no cure why was it so
16:24 16:28 important for you to show it to us today
16:28 16:31 because the world needs to understand
16:31 16:34 it's not an issue of Palestinians and
16:34 16:37 Israelis it's an issue of a crime
16:37 16:39 against
16:39 16:42 humanity but there is also the crucial
16:42 16:44 question of what comes after Hamas both
16:44 16:46 for Gaza and for the Israelis and on
16:46 16:49 that hagari said it's just too soon to
16:49 16:54 tell Nora Tony dle thank you back here
16:54 16:56 at home emergency crews are trying to
16:56 16:58 clear the scene of a deadly multiv
16:58 17:00 vehicle pile up near New Orleans the
17:00 17:02 massive accident ignited fires and
17:02 17:04 partially shut down two major High
