0:27 0:29 the Middle East what the White House
0:29 0:31 says about the Poss possibility Iran is
0:31 0:34 involved our Richard angle is in Israel
0:34 0:36 for us also tonight the terrifying
0:36 0:38 moments in the cockpit of an Alaska
0:38 0:41 Airlines plane an off-duty pilot accused

0:55 0:57 police today saying they don't believe
0:57 1:00 it was motivated by anti-Semitism have
1:00 1:02 they zeroed in on a suspect after
1:02 1:04 failing twice to elect a speaker the
1:04 1:06 House GOP meeting behind closed doors
1:06 1:09 tonight the nine new candidates battling
1:09 1:12 it out the massive pile up in Louisiana
1:12 1:15 about 100 Vehicles involved was it
1:15 1:18 caused by soall super fog and the
1:18 1:20 children of war the boy marking his
1:20 1:23 ninth birthday as a hostage his family's
1:23 1:26 message to the
1:26 1:29 world this is NBC Nightly News with
1:29 1:31 Lester
1:31 1:33 hold good evening there are breaking
1:33 1:35 developments tonight on the hostage
1:35 1:37 front two elderly Israeli women the
1:37 1:40 latest Hamas captives to be freed the
1:40 1:42 group says nurit Cooper and yoked
1:42 1:45 lifshits were let go for compelling
1:45 1:47 humanitarian reasons the two women seen
1:47 1:50 tonight in this Egyptian TV video clip
1:50 1:52 as they were handed over to Israeli
1:52 1:54 officials they release and that of two
1:54 1:57 Americans on Friday raising hopes for
1:57 1:59 the families of the other nearly 200
1:59 2:02 including as many as 20 Americans that
2:02 2:04 may be held hostage against that
2:04 2:06 backdrop Israel today stepping up its
2:06 2:08 bombing campaign against Targets in
2:08 2:11 Hamas occupied Gaza Israel's defense
2:11 2:14 minister saying it may take a month two
2:14 2:16 or three but at the end there will be no
2:16 2:19 more Hamas while according to four us
2:19 2:21 officials the Biden Administration is
2:21 2:24 urging Israel to hold off its expected
2:24 2:27 ground invasion in Gaza to allow more
2:27 2:29 humanitarian Aid into the territory and
2:29 2:32 more time for hostage negotiations our
2:32 2:34 chief foreign correspondent Richard
2:34 2:37 angle leads off our coverage tonight
2:37 2:40 first it was two Americans now two
2:40 2:43 Israeli hostages are free taken out of
2:43 2:46 Gaza and loaded into ambulances tonight
2:46 2:49 on the Egyptian side of the Border Hamas
2:49 2:52 Fred nit Cooper and Y lietz their
2:52 2:54 release like with the American mother
2:54 2:57 and daughter last Friday was facilitated
2:57 3:00 by the Red Cross before Hamas began to
3:00 3:02 release hostages we spoke to a senior
3:02 3:04 Hamas official who said the group was
3:04 3:07 willing to free civilians well if you
3:07 3:08 stop the aggression it can be
3:08 3:10 implemented over the next hour tonight
3:10 3:12 we interviewed him again he told us
3:12 3:15 Hamas wants to talk and is open to
3:15 3:18 negotiations so where do we go now stop
3:18 3:23 the aggression open the borders we we
3:23 3:25 are ready to release oh we don't need to
3:25 3:28 have anyone in our houses I'm talking
3:28 3:30 about stopping the
3:30 3:33 opening the borders uh discussing our
3:33 3:36 rights to get rid of this Siege and
3:36 3:38 occupation and everything is on the
3:38 3:41 table to be discussed at the White House
3:41 3:43 President Biden was asked about a
3:43 3:45 potential ceasefire and said Hamas has
3:45 3:50 it backwards hostages out
3:50 3:53 first today Israel raised its estimate
3:53 3:57 saying there are 222 hostages in Gaza us
3:57 3:59 officials say 10 Americans are still
3:59 4:00 unaccounted
4:00 4:02 for Israel has thousands of troops
4:02 4:05 positioned all around Gaza ready for an
4:05 4:08 invasion that could come at any time but
4:08 4:10 now multiple us officials say the Biden
4:10 4:12 Administration is encouraging Israel to
4:12 4:15 delay it to allow more time for hostage
4:15 4:18 negotiations and to get in humanitarian
4:18 4:19 Aid it's our view that the Israeli
4:19 4:21 Defense Forces Steve need to decide for
4:21 4:22 themselves how they're going to conduct
4:22 4:24 operations we're not in the business of
4:24 4:27 of dictating terms to them as Hamas
4:27 4:29 continues to launch rockets toward
4:29 4:31 Israel the Israeli military says it
4:31 4:33 attacked militants from Hezbollah as
4:33 4:35 they tried to fire an anti-tank missile
4:35 4:38 into Israel from Lebanon and Israel is
4:38 4:41 not stopping its air campaign into Gaza
4:41 4:45 striking 320 Targets in the last 24
4:45 4:48 hours in retaliation for hamas's terror
4:48 4:51 attack that killed 1,400 Israelis
4:51 4:52 including hundreds of
4:52 4:55 civilians this newly released video from
4:55 4:57 the October 7th attack shows the group
4:57 4:59 killing two Israelis as they drove drove
4:59 5:02 along the highway inside Gaza medical
5:02 5:05 officials say more than 5,000
5:05 5:08 Palestinians have now been killed with
5:08 5:10 people digging through the rubble to try
5:10 5:12 to pull out survivors after air
5:12 5:15 strikes and Richard there's news on the
5:15 5:17 humanitarian crisis in Gaza I understand
5:17 5:21 a third truck Convoy getting
5:21 5:24 through yes about 50 trucks so far have
5:24 5:27 made it from Egypt into Gaza but they
5:27 5:29 didn't take in any fuel they're not
5:29 5:31 being allowed to take in fuel and the
5:31 5:34 fuel is badly needed to keep the
5:34 5:36 generators running at the hospitals and
5:36 5:38 tonight One hospital in Gaza City has
5:38 5:41 gone dark the power run out Lester
5:41 5:43 Richard angelon I thank you among the
5:43 5:46 hostages believed to be held by Hamas is
5:46 5:49 hsch Goldberg Poland a 23-year-old with
5:49 5:52 dual Israeli American citiz citizenship
5:52 5:54 who was at that music festival when the
5:54 5:56 terrorists attacked his parents flew to
5:56 5:59 New York today to press United Nations
5:59 6:01 for help getting the hostages released I
6:01 6:03 spoke with them a short time
6:03 6:06 ago let me first if I can get your
6:06 6:08 reaction to there have been another two
6:08 6:11 hostages release of course the Americans
6:11 6:13 on Friday does that does that raise your
6:13 6:16 level of
6:16 6:18 hope I would say on the one hand we look
6:18 6:22 for Hope wherever we can grasp at it so
6:22 6:25 in some ways a little bit bottom line is
6:25 6:28 when all 200 plus are released and for
6:28 6:31 in our case obviously we're most
6:31 6:33 concerned about our own son who's
6:33 6:36 wounded um that's what we're hoping is
6:36 6:38 going to happen it's now been 17 days
6:38 6:40 since Jonathan Poland and Rachel
6:40 6:42 Goldberg have heard from their son
6:42 6:45 Hirsch the 23-year-old was last seen in
6:45 6:49 this photo on the left hiding from Hamas
6:49 6:51 in a bomb shelter near the music
6:51 6:54 festival Witnesses say hersh's arm was
6:54 6:56 blown off in an explosion he then
6:56 6:58 applied his own tourniquet before being
6:58 7:02 driven off in a Hamas truck he needs a
7:02 7:04 certain kind of surgery and he needs
7:04 7:06 heavy doses of antibiotics I don't know
7:06 7:08 that he's getting either one of those
7:08 7:11 two things hirs is a dual us Israeli
7:11 7:13 citizen I first met his parents in
7:13 7:16 Jerusalem where they now live they came
7:16 7:18 to New York to plead for the United
7:18 7:21 Nations help in freeing the hostages
7:21 7:22 there are hostages from somewhere
7:22 7:25 between 30 and 40 countries they're
7:25 7:26 elderly they're babies they are
7:26 7:29 critically wounded this is a global
7:29 7:32 humanitarian issue that we want to raise
7:32 7:34 at the United Nations and have leaders
7:34 7:37 of the world join together and scream to
7:37 7:41 solve this humanitarian crisis I saw the
7:41 7:42 the almost the control room you've
7:42 7:44 established in your living room there
7:44 7:46 have you heard any more information that
7:46 7:48 specifically gives you a timeline of of
7:48 7:49 where he might be or what the
7:49 7:51 circumstances might be at this
7:51 7:55 point we really
7:55 7:58 haven't we really haven't and remember
7:58 8:00 Lester we don't don't
8:00 8:03 know that he didn't die on that truck 17
8:03 8:05 days ago when he was abducted because
8:05 8:08 there's been no proof of life for any of
8:08 8:12 the hostages who are being held so none
8:12 8:14 of us know so your your most important
8:14 8:15 role right now is to keep his name out
8:15 8:18 there and keep this the story out there
8:18 8:20 we have one Mission bring him home and
8:20 8:23 get him the treatment that he
8:23 8:26 needs immediately like time is running
8:26 8:29 out and every single person should know
8:29 8:31 that we just keep hoping that somewhere
8:31 8:34 somehow hsh knows that not only are his
8:34 8:36 parents and his siblings fighting for
8:36 8:39 him but that there is a world of people
8:39 8:41 out there who are pulling for him and
8:41 8:43 pulling for all the hostages and I hope
8:43 8:46 that they sense that sense of good in
8:46 8:50 the world their strength and focus is
8:50 8:52 inspiring there have been an increasing
8:52 8:54 number of attacks on US forces in the
8:54 8:56 mid East involving Iran and tonight the
8:56 8:59 Pentagon is moving more resources to the
8:59 9:02 region Courtney cuby reports with late
9:02 9:05 details tonight with growing threats to
9:05 9:07 the US military in the Middle East the
9:07 9:09 Pentagon making significant moves
9:09 9:11 including reinforcing their air defenses
9:11 9:14 re-rooting the USS Eisenhower carrier
9:14 9:16 strike group to the waters off Iran and
9:16 9:18 telling more US troops to be ready to
9:18 9:21 deploy after at least six attacks
9:21 9:23 threatening US troops in as many days in
9:23 9:26 Iraq Syria and the Red Sea the US
9:26 9:28 blaming Iran and their proxy groups we
9:28 9:30 know that Iran is closely monitoring
9:30 9:32 these events and in some cases actively
9:32 9:35 facilitating these attacks us officials
9:35 9:37 say troops would not go to war in Gaza
9:37 9:39 and the goal is to deter a larger
9:39 9:41 regional conflict NBC News recently had
9:41 9:44 an exclusive look at that deterrence
9:44 9:46 this is the HMS Prince of Wales it's
9:46 9:48 England's newest and biggest warship but
9:48 9:50 right now we're out here to see how the
9:50 9:52 British Navy and the US Navy and US
9:52 9:55 Marine Corps are all working together
9:55 9:57 that includes US Marine Corp Ospreys and
9:57 9:59 f-35s that are practicing land landing
9:59 10:02 on the deck of this British carrier US
10:02 10:03 Sailors US Marines Royal Navy sailors
10:03 10:05 Royal Marines have operated alongside
10:05 10:07 each other for years but right now we're
10:07 10:10 really focused on deterring any actor
10:10 10:12 whether it's Iran whether it's one of
10:12 10:15 the non-state actors and just today the
10:15 10:17 US took down two drones targeting
10:17 10:18 American troops at Alton in southern
10:18 10:21 Syria there were no casualties Lester
10:21 10:23 all right Courtney thank you tonight an
10:23 10:25 Alaska Airlines pilot is under arrest
10:25 10:27 charged with trying to bring down a
10:27 10:29 commercial airliner and which he was a
10:29 10:32 passenger let's get more now from Tom
10:32 10:35 Costello held tonight in an Oregon jail
10:35 10:38 44-year-old Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph
10:38 10:42 Emerson booked on 167 charges including
10:42 10:45 83 potential counts of attempted murder
10:45 10:47 the FBI and local police alleg Emerson
10:47 10:50 was off duty riding in the cockpit jump
10:50 10:52 seat flying on Horizon Air from Evert
10:52 10:55 Washington to San Francisco Sunday night
10:55 10:57 when he suddenly tried to pull the
10:57 10:59 engine fire suppression controls to shut
10:59 11:02 down the engines at cruising altitude
11:02 11:04 the pilot and co-pilot stopped and
11:04 11:06 subdued Emerson removed him from the
11:06 11:08 cockpit then diverted the plane to
11:08 11:10 Portland we've got the uh guy that tried
11:10 11:12 to shut the Eng down uh out of the
11:12 11:14 cockpit we WL course soon as we get on
11:14 11:17 the ground and Par with 83 people on
11:17 11:18 board it's definitely frightening that
11:18 11:21 someone is um struggling like that up in
11:21 11:23 the cockpit law enforcement sources do
11:23 11:24 not believe there is any connection to
11:24 11:26 terrorism or the events in the Middle
11:26 11:29 East but today the FAA issued an alert
11:29 11:32 to all Airlines For Crews to maintain
11:32 11:34 vigilance and situational awareness
11:34 11:37 other recent cases of Pilots attempting
11:37 11:39 or succeeding in crashing planes include
11:39 11:42 China Eastern last year German Wings
11:42 11:45 Egypt Air and possibly Malaysia Airlines
11:45 11:49 370 still missing in 2018 a maintenance
11:49 11:51 worker took an empty Horizon air jet on
11:51 11:53 a joy ride before crashing and killing
11:53 11:57 himself now investigators must determine
11:57 11:59 the motivation behind Emerson's alleged
11:59 12:02 actions this is not the actions of a
12:02 12:04 rational human much less a highly
12:04 12:06 trained pilot Pilots over 40 must
12:06 12:08 undergo physical exams every 6 months
12:08 12:10 and disclose mental health issues and
12:10 12:12 medications full mental health
12:12 12:14 evaluations are not part of that
12:14 12:17 Emerson's last physical was last month
12:17 12:19 Lester okay Tom Costello thanks we're
12:19 12:21 learning much more tonight about the
12:21 12:23 killing of a Detroit synagogue leader
12:23 12:25 who was found stabbed to death outside
12:25 12:28 her home on Saturday Jesse kersch has
12:28 12:30 late details
12:30 12:32 after well-known Detroit Jewish leader
12:32 12:34 Samantha wall was stabbed to death
12:34 12:36 tonight police still have not announced
12:36 12:38 any arrest for now investigators
12:38 12:41 considering multiple Persons of Interest
12:41 12:44 we are just short of calling uh one of
12:44 12:46 the people a suspect the 40-year-old's
12:46 12:47 sudden death sparked fears of a
12:47 12:50 potential hate crime but police do not
12:50 12:53 believe anti-Semitism was the motive
12:53 12:54 we're not ruling out anything we're
12:54 12:56 going to go where the in information and
12:56 12:59 the evidence takes us and right now now
12:59 13:01 the evidence does not take us there
13:01 13:03 investigators say early Saturday wall
13:03 13:05 was found dead near her home stabbed
13:05 13:08 multiple times just hours after she left
13:08 13:11 a wedding around 12:30 a.m. we've heard
13:11 13:12 from sources that she did not have any
13:12 13:14 defensive wounds did she leave this
13:14 13:17 wedding alone yeah I can't get into that
13:17 13:20 and the your sources um you know I'm not
13:20 13:23 going to confirm uh or deny that at this
13:23 13:25 time at the crime scene authorities say
13:25 13:27 they found a trail of blood leading to
13:27 13:29 Wall's home where they believe she was
13:29 13:31 attacked investigators adding there were
13:31 13:34 no signs of forced
13:34 13:36 entry Wall's alleged murder leaving
13:36 13:38 friends and family grief stricken
13:38 13:40 mourning the synagogue president who
13:40 13:42 wanted to bring people together in
13:42 13:45 divisive times it seems like we need her
13:45 13:48 now more than we ever
13:48 13:50 did
13:50 13:55 yeah how do you make sense of that I
13:55 13:57 don't there's nothing about this loss
13:57 14:00 that makes sense Jesse joining us now
14:00 14:02 did authorities give any indication
14:02 14:03 about a
14:03 14:06 motive investigators have not publicly
14:06 14:09 shared any motive so far but police
14:09 14:12 stress they do not believe that anyone
14:12 14:15 else is at risk Lester Jesse kersch
14:15 14:17 thank you now to the crisis at the
14:17 14:19 capital where nine congressmen who want
14:19 14:22 to be house Speaker are taking part in a
14:22 14:24 candidate forum tonight then tomorrow
14:24 14:26 Republicans will select their next
14:26 14:28 nominee after the two previous
14:28 14:30 candidates Jim Jordan and Steve scalise
14:30 14:32 were rejected the stalemate has been
14:32 14:36 going on for almost 3 weeks now in 60
14:36 14:37 seconds the horrific scene on the
14:37 14:40 highway dense fog and smoke causing a
14:40 14:42 massive pile up in Louisiana more than a
14:42 14:44 dozen injured we'll have more right
14:44 14:47 after
14:47 14:50 this more than a dozen people were taken
14:50 14:52 to the hospital today after a pile up in
14:52 14:55 Louisiana involving about a 100 cars and
14:55 14:58 officials say so-called super fog
14:58 15:00 conditions likely played a role
15:00 15:03 Priscilla Thompson
15:03 15:05 explains a massive
15:05 15:08 pileup shutting down this interstate
15:08 15:11 near New Orleans in both directions for
15:11 15:14 hours pickup trucks stacked on top of
15:14 15:17 each other at least 2 18 wheelers
15:17 15:21 erupting in Flames for Miles look at it
15:21 15:21 it's
15:21 15:24 crazy this was the scene on Interstate
15:24 15:27 55 at least 21 people were taken to the
15:27 15:29 hospital including uding three in
15:29 15:31 critical condition according to hospital
15:31 15:34 officials this is a very uh demanding
15:34 15:37 scene this is a a a taxing scene for our
15:37 15:39 First Responders the cause of the 100
15:39 15:42 car wreck likely a combination of dense
15:42 15:44 fog and smoke from at least three
15:44 15:46 wildfires burning in Louisiana that
15:46 15:49 reduce visibility in the area to near
15:49 15:52 zero it's known as a super fog super fog
15:52 15:54 is when you have foggy conditions near a
15:54 15:56 fire we get the water droplets on all
15:56 15:58 the debris that's in the air from the
15:58 16:00 fire and that makes the smoke even more
16:00 16:02 dense and the fog so thick it's
16:02 16:04 horrendous for travel sometimes down to
16:04 16:08 zero visibility that fog has now lifted
16:08 16:10 but tonight many are still recovering
16:10 16:14 from a crash unlike anything they'd seen
16:14 16:18 before look at this Priscilla Thompson
16:18 16:21 NBC News and up next the discovery
16:21 16:22 police made as they search for the
