1:20 1:24 family behind to answer Israel's call to
1:24 1:28 serve this is NBC Nightly News with
1:28 1:31 Lester Hol
1:31 1:32 good evening and welcome everyone as the
1:32 1:35 picture of Gaza Under Siege grows dimmer
1:35 1:38 and more urgent a newly freed Israeli
1:38 1:40 hostage is speaking publicly about her
1:40 1:42 ordeal in the embattled territory
1:42 1:44 including her capture along with her
1:44 1:46 husband that she describes as a hell
1:46 1:49 that we never knew before and never
1:49 1:51 thought we would experience the
1:51 1:53 85-year-old offering a glimpse of her
1:53 1:55 life in captivity the assurances of her
1:55 1:57 captur that they wouldn't hurt us and

2:04 2:07 Responders inside Gaza our camera crew
2:07 2:09 capturing the drama of another child
2:09 2:12 pulled from the rubble of falling bombs
2:12 2:14 Gaza Health authorities report more than
2:14 2:17 5700 people have been killed there as
2:17 2:19 its Health Care System appears to be
2:19 2:22 failing as Israel continues to retaliate
2:22 2:25 against Hamas for the October 7th Terror
2:25 2:27 attacks it's where we begin tonight with
2:27 2:28 Richard
2:28 2:32 Engle Gaza looks like it was hit by an
2:32 2:34 earthquake the Hamas run Health Ministry
2:34 2:37 claims more than 700 Palestinians were
2:37 2:41 killed in just the last 24 hours nearly
2:41 2:43 half of them children in the deadliest
2:43 2:45 day in Gaza so
2:45 2:48 far our camera crew captured one moment
2:48 2:50 a snapshot of Gaza today multiple
2:50 2:53 Witnesses say this three-story building
2:53 2:56 was hit by an Israeli air strike first
2:56 2:58 you can see a
2:58 3:04 hand
3:04 3:06 the girl is
3:06 3:09 alive and not alone we counted five
3:09 3:11 children pulled from this building three
3:11 3:15 living two appear to be dead residents
3:15 3:18 tell us they're from the same
3:18 3:20 family the Israeli government says Hamas
3:20 3:23 brought this upon Gaza when it launched
3:23 3:26 its brutal terror attack murdering 1,400
3:26 3:28 Israelis including young children and
3:28 3:31 babies Israel says it's targeting Hamas
3:31 3:34 and today stopped a cell of Hamas divers
3:34 3:36 attempting to infiltrate Israeli
3:36 3:39 territory by SE the test for the west
3:39 3:42 and for civilization is
3:42 3:46 Hamas if Hamas emerges Victorious we
3:46 3:50 will all lose at least 220 hostages are
3:50 3:53 still in Gaza today we heard from one of
3:53 3:55 the hostages released last night
3:55 3:59 85-year-old yev lifshitz a swarm of
3:59 4:01 people came through the fence her
4:01 4:03 daughter helped her describe what she
4:03 4:06 called two weeks of hell she was taken
4:06 4:09 on the back of a m recounting how she
4:09 4:11 was hit by Sticks by her kidnappers kept
4:11 4:13 inside underground tunnels with five
4:13 4:16 others liet's husband remains a hostage
4:16 4:19 while today at the UN families of Hamas
4:19 4:21 captives pleaded for their return why is
4:21 4:23 no one crying out for these people to be
4:23 4:26 allowed access to the Red Cross why is
4:26 4:29 no one demanding just Proof of Life Eli
4:29 4:32 David's brother is being held too
4:32 4:34 kidnapped from the music festival where
4:34 4:36 Hamas gunman executed hundreds of
4:36 4:39 Israelis he shared with us the videos
4:39 4:42 Hamas posted online he's handcuffed with
4:42 4:45 his hands behind his back and a
4:45 4:48 terrorist holding a gun in one hand and
4:48 4:50 in the other hand head loocking my
4:50 4:53 brother Eli like many Israelis wants the
4:53 4:56 world to see these images to understand
4:56 4:58 what Israel is up against we know that
4:58 5:00 he's alive so far Hamas has only
5:00 5:03 released four hostages all women my
5:03 5:07 brother is a young man he's not an old
5:07 5:11 man he's not a baby and it's maybe a
5:11 5:13 disadvantage from him in that
5:13 5:15 situation
5:15 5:20 so no hope this time there is so much
5:20 5:22 pain and anger on both sides of this
5:22 5:24 conflict and not a glimmer of a
5:24 5:27 resolution in sight and I want the
5:27 5:29 people of America to remember his name
5:29 5:32 to to not forget till he comes home his
5:32 5:34 name Avatar
5:34 5:38 David and not forget his face and that's
5:38 5:40 it thank you for the opportunity you
5:40 5:42 know Richard everyone is watching this
5:42 5:43 trying to understand where it could be
5:43 5:46 headed including this potential Israeli
5:46 5:48 ground operation that would Target Hamas
5:48 5:51 in Gaza what do we
5:51 5:53 know well there's still no signs that a
5:53 5:56 ground invasion is imminent but Israeli
5:56 5:58 officials are signaling that the war
5:58 6:01 could last months Lester Richard angle
6:01 6:03 tonight thank you as the humanitarian
6:03 6:05 crisis worsens in Gaza new calls of the
6:05 6:08 United Nations for a cease fire and the
6:08 6:10 US now suggesting there should be a
6:10 6:13 pause in Israel's bombing campaign
6:13 6:14 Andrea Mitchell has that part of the
6:14 6:16 story for
6:16 6:19 us as Israeli air strikes continue to
6:19 6:22 pound Gaza 2third of the hospitals are
6:22 6:24 out of service according to the World
6:24 6:27 Health Organization the UN relief agency
6:27 6:29 says it will have to stop operations in
6:29 6:30 Gaza tomorrow night when it runs out of
6:30 6:33 fuel tonight UNICEF says there's been a
6:33 6:35 devastating effect on children and
6:35 6:37 calling for an immediate ceasefire a
6:37 6:40 humanitarian disaster leading the UN
6:40 6:42 Secretary General to Echo that plea I'm
6:42 6:44 deeply concerned about the clear
6:44 6:46 violations of international humanitarian
6:46 6:49 law that we are witnessing in Gaza
6:49 6:51 responding to the pressure the US for
6:51 6:52 the first time opening the door to a
6:52 6:54 pause in the air strikes to get
6:54 6:57 desperately needed Aid in and civilians
6:57 6:59 out humanitarian pauses must be
6:59 7:01 considered for these purposes the
7:01 7:03 Israeli and Palestinian foreign
7:03 7:05 ministers face to face speaking past
7:05 7:08 each other we are here today to Stop The
7:08 7:11 Killing to stop the massacres being
7:11 7:14 committed against the Palestinian People
7:14 7:16 Israel focusing on the Hamas Massacre 18
7:16 7:21 days ago this massacre will go down in
7:21 7:24 history as more brutal than
7:24 7:27 Isis Hamas are new
7:27 7:31 Nazis Emily renberger is among 400
7:31 7:32 Americans stuck in Gaza with her
7:32 7:35 Palestinian husband and their five young
7:35 7:37 children unable to get out her father in
7:37 7:39 Florida says food and water are getting
7:39 7:41 harder to find just things are getting
7:41 7:44 worse and uh it's it's you know scares
7:44 7:46 me to death at a meeting at the state
7:46 7:47 department tomorrow secretary blinkin
7:47 7:50 will urge China's foreign minister to
7:50 7:52 pressure Iran and its proxy Hezbollah
7:52 7:55 not to widen the war blesser Andrea
7:55 7:57 thank you the off-duty pilot accused of
7:57 7:59 trying to crash a regional jet he was
7:59 8:02 riding in now faces state and federal
8:02 8:04 charges he told investigators he was
8:04 8:06 having a nervous breakdown and admitted
8:06 8:09 using psychedelic mushrooms days before
8:09 8:11 the flight here's Tom
8:11 8:14 Costello all right in an Oregon
8:14 8:16 courtroom this afternoon Alaska Airlines
8:16 8:20 pilot Joseph Emerson facing 167 counts
8:20 8:22 of attempted murder reckless
8:22 8:24 endangerment and endangering an aircraft
8:24 8:26 plus interfering with the flight crew
8:26 8:29 there is probable cause to believe that
8:29 8:30 defendant has committed one of the
8:30 8:33 offenses today an FBI affidavit claims
8:33 8:35 while off duty riding in the cockpit
8:35 8:37 jump seat Emerson told the pilot and
8:37 8:40 co-pilot I'm not okay then reached up
8:40 8:42 and grabbed the red fire suppression
8:42 8:45 handles to shut down the plane's engines
8:45 8:47 for nearly 30 seconds he struggled with
8:47 8:49 the crew before they kicked him out of
8:49 8:51 the cockpit declaring an emergency let's
8:51 8:53 just give you a heads up we've got the
8:53 8:55 uh guy that tried to shut the engin down
8:55 8:57 uh out of the cockpit Emerson walked to
8:57 8:59 the rear of the plane where he allegedly
8:59 9:01 told a flight attendant you need to Cuff
9:01 9:04 me right now or it's going to be bad
9:04 9:06 then with handcuffs on his wrists he
9:06 9:08 allegedly tried to open the emergency
9:08 9:10 exit though that's impossible saying I
9:10 9:13 messed everything up and tried to kill
9:13 9:15 everybody and said he thought he was
9:15 9:17 having a nervous breakdown and hadn't
9:17 9:20 slept in 40 hours the affidavit say
9:20 9:22 Emerson denied taking any medication but
9:22 9:25 told police he'd been depressed for 6
9:25 9:26 years and had taken psychedelic
9:26 9:29 mushrooms 48 hours prior to to the
9:29 9:31 flight married with the family neighbors
9:31 9:34 say it was all out of character for the
9:34 9:36 veteran pilot how he treats the kids the
9:36 9:39 family no indications of anything wrong
9:39 9:41 but the required Pilot Medical exams do
9:41 9:44 not include in-depth mental health
9:44 9:47 evaluations the FAA requires Pilots to
9:47 9:50 self-report any kind of issues regarding
9:50 9:52 depression or mental illness but there
9:52 9:55 really is no other intensive
9:55 9:57 psychological screening obviously a
9:57 9:59 background check is performed by by the
9:59 10:02 airline and medical records are reviewed
10:02 10:06 but uh there's not too much deep diving
10:06 10:09 into the mental health of a pilot and
10:09 10:11 Tom we understand Emerson is tonight on
10:11 10:13 suicide watch in the jail yeah that's
10:13 10:16 right uh he did plead not guilty today
10:16 10:18 though he also told investigators he
10:18 10:20 pulled the engine shot off handles
10:20 10:22 because he thought he was having a dream
10:22 10:24 and he wanted to wake up and he told
10:24 10:26 them I'm admitting to what I did I'm not
10:26 10:28 fighting any charges you want to bring
10:28 10:30 against me luster oh very disturbing all
10:30 10:32 right Tom Castello thanks two former
10:32 10:34 lawyers for Donald Trump in the
10:34 10:36 spotlight tonight one the latest
10:36 10:38 codefendant to plead guilty in the
10:38 10:40 election interference case against the
10:40 10:42 Republican front runner the other a star
10:42 10:45 prosecution witness at his fraud trial
10:45 10:48 in New York Laura Jared has late
10:48 10:50 details for weeks attorney Jenna Ellis
10:50 10:53 fiercely defended then president Trump
10:53 10:55 as he falsely claimed the 2020 election
10:55 10:58 was rigged today she sobbed as she told
10:58 11:01 the judge she was wrong if I knew then
11:01 11:03 what I know now I would have declined to
11:03 11:05 represent Donald Trump in these
11:05 11:07 postelection challenges Ellis in a
11:07 11:09 Georgia courtroom pleading guilty to a
11:09 11:12 felony for helping fuel lies about
11:12 11:14 thousands of dead people casting votes
11:14 11:17 in 2020 I failed to do my due diligence
11:17 11:20 smiling for her mug shot just two months
11:20 11:23 ago now the fourth codefendant to flip
11:23 11:25 in fton County's sprawling election
11:25 11:27 interference case against the former
11:27 11:29 president and more than a dozen others
11:29 11:32 Mr Trump has pleaded not guilty arguing
11:32 11:34 he's being targeted by Democratic
11:34 11:36 prosecutors because he's the Republican
11:36 11:38 front runner he was back in a Manhattan
11:38 11:41 courtroom today facing the state's star
11:41 11:43 witness his former fixer turned foe
11:43 11:45 Michael Cohen this is about
11:45 11:48 accountability plain and simple raise
11:48 11:50 your right hand it was Cohen's
11:50 11:52 Congressional testimony that jump
11:52 11:54 started the New York case where his
11:54 11:56 former boss now stands to lose his
11:56 11:58 namesake company accused of exaggerating
11:58 12:00 the value of his assets to receive
12:00 12:04 better loan terms in a $250 million
12:04 12:07 civil fraud suit it was my experience
12:07 12:10 that Mr Trump inflated his total assets
12:10 12:13 when it served his purposes today Cohen
12:13 12:15 said he was tasked by the former
12:15 12:17 president with boosting Mr Trump's total
12:17 12:19 assets to achieve a number he
12:19 12:22 arbitrarily elected while Mr Trump's
12:22 12:24 legal team has argued real estate values
12:24 12:27 are subjective outside of Court Mr Trump
12:27 12:29 took aim at Cohen's credibility
12:29 12:31 pointing to Cohen's guilty plead for tax
12:31 12:34 fraud and lying to
12:34 12:38 Congress Li know he's a liar trying to
12:38 12:41 get a better deal for himself but it's
12:41 12:43 not going to work we did nothing wrong
12:43 12:45 and that's been proven and Laura is here
12:45 12:47 Michael Cohen will be back on the stand
12:47 12:49 again tomorrow yes he will face more
12:49 12:51 cross-examination by Mr Trump's legal
12:51 12:52 team tomorrow as they're trying to show
12:52 12:54 the judge why he simply shouldn't be
12:54 12:56 trusted given things that he said in the
12:56 12:58 past Mr Trump also expected back in cour
12:58 13:00 court tomorrow they receded just feet
13:00 13:02 from each other today the first time
13:02 13:04 they've been in the same room in 5 years
13:04 13:06 last year Laura Jared thank you House
13:06 13:08 Republicans chose yet another candidate
13:08 13:10 to be house Speaker today but Tom ammer
13:10 13:13 of Minnesota dropped out less than four
13:13 13:15 hours later Garett H is at the capital
13:15 13:18 so Garrett this crisis continues yeah
13:18 13:20 Lester as we enter a fourth week without
13:20 13:22 a house Speaker Republicans seem no
13:22 13:24 closer tonight to finding a nominee who
13:24 13:26 can actually get the 2117 votes
13:26 13:29 necessary to claim the job now for a few
13:29 13:31 hours today it looked like Tom edmer who
13:31 13:33 is currently the number three house
13:33 13:34 Republican might have been that
13:34 13:36 candidate after winning the nomination
13:36 13:38 on a secret ballot but with nearly 30
13:38 13:40 Republican lawmakers refusing to support
13:40 13:42 him and former president Trump coming
13:42 13:44 out strongly against him emmer withdrew
13:44 13:46 tonight without ever even calling for a
13:46 13:48 floor vote on his candidacy that sent
13:48 13:50 the GOP back to the drawing board with
13:50 13:52 another closed door meeting planned for
13:52 13:54 tonight with the question still looming
13:54 13:57 can anyone lead this fractured party
13:57 13:59 Lester all right Garrett thanks we're
13:59 14:01 tracking the first significant winter
14:01 14:03 storm of the Season it could bring more
14:03 14:05 than a foot of snow from parts of the
14:05 14:07 Northwest to the Rockies on the other
14:07 14:09 side of the system heavy rain and
14:09 14:11 isolated floods are impacting the Upper
14:11 14:14 Midwest and a flash flood watch is in
14:14 14:16 effect for parts of Texas and Oklahoma
14:16 14:19 through Thursday in 60 seconds thousands
14:19 14:21 more join the United Auto Workers strike
14:21 14:24 from Plants to local repair shops the
14:24 14:27 massive impact
14:27 14:29 tonight
14:29 14:31 back now the United Auto Workers
14:31 14:33 escalating their strike for the second
14:33 14:35 day in a row thousands more walking off
14:35 14:38 the job and as the strike nears the six

14:40 14:46 consumers is only growing here's Maggie
14:46 14:49 vesa tonight another 5,000 Auto Workers
14:49 14:52 walking off the job this time at a GM
14:52 14:55 plant in Texas inflation left us behind
14:55 14:57 greedy CEOs has left us behind and we we
14:57 15:00 just want what's right nearly 6 weeks
15:00 15:03 into the UAW stoppage close to 45,000
15:03 15:05 Auto Workers are on strike against
15:05 15:07 America's big three car companies
15:07 15:10 they're all about money you know it's
15:10 15:12 time to share the car companies pushing
15:12 15:15 back against uaw's latest escalations a
15:15 15:17 new analysis estimates the strike has
15:17 15:19 already cost the Auto industry more than
15:19 15:22 $9.3 billion for the first few weeks of
15:22 15:25 the the strike we had some inventory on
15:25 15:26 hand that we were able to get out and
15:26 15:27 get to our customers it's gotten a
15:27 15:29 little bit tigh
15:29 15:31 we can't get the parts the owner of
15:31 15:33 Chicago's Windy City Motors says staff
15:33 15:34 can't find parts through normal
15:34 15:37 suppliers instead turning online even to
15:37 15:40 eBay repairs that should take days he
15:40 15:43 says now take weeks customers are now
15:43 15:45 getting upset yes they're getting very
15:45 15:47 upset they're getting upset because it's
15:47 15:49 now affecting their life if they can't
15:49 15:52 use their car they can't get to work
15:52 15:54 meanwhile six weeks without paychecks
15:54 15:56 hitting home for some workers you didn't
15:56 15:59 think it would go on this long no no
15:59 16:01 last month we met Jake Deshawn a father
16:01 16:04 of two on strike from Detroit's Ford
16:04 16:06 plant tonight he tells us he's behind on
16:06 16:08 his mortgage and other bills he says
16:08 16:11 there are mixed emotions among workers
16:11 16:12 there's some people that are strong back
16:12 16:14 in it thinking we're uh that that we
16:14 16:16 could possibly get a little more I would
16:16 16:18 go back today you would go back today if
16:18 16:21 you could yeah as the picket lines grow
16:21 16:24 some growing desperate for a deal Maggie
16:24 16:27 vup NBC News Chicago there's more to
16:27 16:30 come up next driverless cars may be the
16:30 16:32 way of the future but for now California
16:32 16:34 is suspending one company's cars we'll
16:34 16:39 tell you what's behind that move
16:39 16:42 next tonight California is suspending
16:42 16:44 the use of GM's Cruise driverless
16:44 16:46 Vehicles saying they're not safe enough
16:46 16:48 for the public let's get more from
16:48 16:50 Miguel
16:50 16:52 almager pumping the brakes on autonomous
16:52 16:55 vehicles operated by Crews effective
16:55 16:59 today California's DMV has suspended the
16:59 17:01 company's deployment and testing of
17:01 17:04 self-driving cars after a series of
17:04 17:07 mishaps and a serious crash the
17:07 17:09 Department of Motor Vehicles says
17:09 17:11 cruises cars aren't safe for public
17:11 17:14 operation a serious roadblock for the
17:14 17:17 company owned in part by GM who is
17:17 17:19 expanding driverless service in cities
17:19 17:21 like San Francisco the major companies
17:21 17:24 need to rack up more miles more testing
17:24 17:26 so this could potentially set the
17:26 17:29 industry as a whole back after our teams
17:29 17:32 in the field witness safety problems and
17:32 17:34 it's just staying here I'm not sure why
17:34 17:38 driverless airs this not good and even
17:38 17:41 dangerous encounters today suspension by
17:41 17:43 the DMV comes under heightened scrutiny
17:43 17:45 For Crews which says it will cooperate
17:45 17:48 with the DMV's investigation the company
17:48 17:51 says it proactively shares safety and
17:51 17:53 crash information having already logged
17:53 17:57 more than 5 million driverless miles
17:57 17:59 California's DMV says Cruz can keep its
17:59 18:01 cars on the road as long as Safety
18:01 18:04 drivers are inside and the company can
18:04 18:07 reapply for its suspended permits if it
18:07 18:10 meets safety requirements but until then
18:10 18:12 it seems Cruz has hit the end of the
18:12 18:15 driverless Road in California putting
18:15 18:18 the future in the back seat for now
