3:07 3:10 Massacre yeah have an active shooter we

3:31 3:32 machine and was on top of the machines
3:32 3:34 for about 10 minutes until the cops got
3:34 3:37 there minutes later at 7:08 p.m. frantic
3:37 3:40 911 calls began streaming in with

3:52 3:54 the hospital we had approximately 100
3:54 3:56 team members who were off duty come into
3:56 3:58 the hospital to help uh ensure that we
3:58 3:59 were able to care for not only the
3:59 4:04 patients that we received uh from this
4:04 4:06 horrible scene uh but also take care of
4:06 4:08 the patients that we had there multiple
4:08 4:10 law enforcement agencies including the
4:10 4:12 FBI and State Police responded to the
4:12 4:14 scenes searching for the suspect
4:14 4:17 40-year-old Army reservist Robert Carr
4:17 4:19 shown in these surveillance photos
4:19 4:22 carrying a semi-automatic rifle he
4:22 4:24 should be considered armed and
4:24 4:27 dangerous based on our investigation we
4:27 4:28 believe this is someone that should not
4:28 4:31 be approached 3 hours after the shooting
4:31 4:33 began police discovered an SUV
4:33 4:35 registered to the suspect at a boat
4:35 4:38 launch in the town of Lisbon residents
4:38 4:40 in three nearby communities were advised
4:40 4:43 to shelter in place today many schools
4:43 4:45 and businesses were closed this is a
4:45 4:48 dark day for Maine the mass shooting has
4:48 4:51 shattered a sense of security in Maine
4:51 4:53 considered one of the safest states in
4:53 4:56 the country Governor Janet Mill spent
4:56 4:59 years working in Leon this city did not
4:59 5:01 deserve ve this terrible assault on its
5:01 5:05 citizens on its peace of mind on its
5:05 5:09 sense of security no city does no State
5:09 5:12 no people with that multi-state man Hut
5:12 5:15 underway residents here are still being
5:15 5:17 told to shelter in place tonight
5:17 5:19 investigators are looking into a
5:19 5:21 possible motive into the shootings
5:21 5:24 including why the two locations for the
5:24 5:27 attacks were chosen cbs's Jeff pay has
5:27 5:29 learned new details about the suspect's
5:29 5:32 milit experience as well as his history
5:32 5:33 of mental
5:33 5:36 illness CBS News has learned that
5:36 5:37 investigators are looking into whether
5:37 5:40 Robert card was targeting his current or
5:40 5:42 former girlfriend in last night's mass
5:42 5:44 shooting sources say he went to the
5:44 5:47 bowling alley first and then the bar
5:47 5:50 nearly 4 miles away it's unclear if the
5:50 5:53 person was at either location today
5:53 5:55 police also found a note at the gunman's
5:55 5:58 house though it's unclear what it says
5:58 6:01 this is all all Hands-On deck approach
6:01 6:03 law enforcement officials say card is an
6:03 6:06 army reservist the Army says he enlisted
6:06 6:08 in the reserves in 2002 and is now a
6:08 6:11 Sergeant First Class he worked as a
6:11 6:13 petroleum Supply specialist and has had
6:13 6:17 no combat deployments in July of this
6:17 6:19 year card was with his unit at West
6:19 6:21 Point When leaders reported that he was
6:21 6:24 acting erratically New York State Police
6:24 6:26 took him to an army Hospital for an
6:26 6:28 evaluation a main law enforcement
6:28 6:30 Bulletin said the card was released
6:30 6:34 about 2 weeks later the alert also noted
6:34 6:37 card was hearing voices and had
6:37 6:38 threatened to shoot up a military
6:38 6:41 installation in Southern Maine card's
6:41 6:45 cousin Michael Mercier he's got a lot of
6:45 6:47 problems up in his head right
6:47 6:52 now one of them's uh schizophrenic Tom
6:52 6:54 chittum a former associate deputy
6:54 6:57 director of the ATF says despite the
6:57 7:00 mental evaluation Federal federal law
7:00 7:02 would not prohibit card from having such
7:02 7:05 a weapon simply being diagnosed with a
7:05 7:08 mental health disorder is not
7:08 7:11 disqualifying and neither is a
7:11 7:14 commitment when it is voluntary or a
7:14 7:17 brief commitment for observation last
7:17 7:19 night investigators found card's vehicle
7:19 7:22 at a boat launch sources say law
7:22 7:24 enforcement is searching for a boat that
7:24 7:26 he could have used to escape he has a
7:26 7:28 military background and may have an
7:28 7:30 advantage but keep in mind many of these
7:30 7:32 Law Enforcement Officers they are
7:32 7:34 Hunters they are fishermen and they have
7:34 7:38 military backgrounds as well the gunman
7:38 7:40 was heavily armed for this assault
7:40 7:42 investigators believe that he may have
7:42 7:45 used an extended magazine as well as a
7:45 7:48 scope a firearm was recovered in that
7:48 7:50 abandoned vehicle and dka intelligence
7:50 7:52 sources are telling CBS news that they
7:52 7:55 believe that that recent breakup may
7:55 7:58 have been a significant destabilizing
7:58 8:01 event in the Gunman's life that said
8:01 8:04 there is still no clear motive right now
8:04 8:06 for this
8:06 8:09 shooting all right Jeff pay for us
8:09 8:11 tonight thank you President Biden
8:11 8:13 ordered Flags to be lowered to half
8:13 8:16 staff in memory of the victims noting
8:16 8:18 that the number of gun deaths in America

10:34 10:36 Diaz and Washington for the rest of
10:36 10:38 today's top stories Good evening Adriana
10:38 10:40 thank you so much daica turning overseas
10:40 10:42 now to the war in the Middle East
10:42 10:45 Israeli air strikes are intensifying
10:45 10:47 with ground forces conducting a targeted
10:47 10:50 raid into Gaza in their hunt for Hamas
10:50 10:53 militants cbs's Charlie Daga is in telie
10:53 10:55 where the military is preparing for the
10:55 10:57 next stage of the
10:57 11:00 war Israeli Defense Forces released this
11:00 11:03 overnight footage said to show its tanks
11:03 11:06 Crossing into Northern Gaza conducting a
11:06 11:09 targeted raid armored bulldozers paved
11:09 11:12 the way tanks open fire on suspected
11:12 11:16 Hamas targets before with drawing the
11:16 11:18 IDF described the operation as
11:18 11:20 preparations for the next stage of
11:20 11:23 combat but even before that next stage
11:23 11:25 begins is the question of what comes
11:25 11:28 next growing concerns about Israel's
11:28 11:31 long longterm strategy after invading
11:31 11:34 Gaza one reason the US has dispatched
11:34 11:37 Lieutenant General James Glenn as a top
11:37 11:40 advisor here a specialist in urban
11:40 11:43 Warfare on the battlefields of fua and
11:43 11:45 moso in
11:45 11:49 Iraq in Gaza today with the death toll
11:49 11:52 mounting to more than 7,000 according to
11:52 11:56 officials there so too is the sadness
11:56 11:59 anger and Desperation they count the
11:59 12:03 shrouded bodies even as more arrive at
12:03 12:06 least 50 hostages are among those killed
12:06 12:08 Hamas Health officials claim tonight
12:08 12:12 victims of Israeli bombardment CBS News
12:12 12:15 can't independently verify those numbers
12:15 12:18 locating the remaining captives hidden
12:18 12:20 in the Maze of tunnels beneath Gaza will
12:20 12:23 be extremely difficult says former
12:23 12:27 Israeli intelligence Chief H toer it's a
12:27 12:29 kind of a mission impossible to find the
12:29 12:32 ostriches intelligence Wise It's very
12:32 12:35 very very difficult almost on the line
12:35 12:38 of impossible best case scenario Hamas
12:38 12:40 releases at least some of the hostages
12:40 12:44 worst case scenario doesn't end well for
12:44 12:47 anyone the moment you kidnap
12:47 12:51 babies and old ladies there are no rules
12:51 12:53 anymore no
12:53 12:55 rules tonight the Israeli military
12:55 12:58 spokesman said the Army will continue to
12:58 13:01 to conduct limited raids including
13:01 13:04 tonight and they will continue all the
13:04 13:07 more forcefully in the coming days
13:07 13:10 Adriana thank you Charlie and your team
13:10 13:12 back here in Washington the new Speaker
13:12 13:14 of the House Louisiana Republican Mike
13:14 13:16 Johnson met with President Biden today
13:16 13:19 at the White House until now the staunch
13:19 13:20 conservative was little known outside
13:20 13:23 his State and party and as Nicole
13:23 13:25 Killian reports he's remaining tight
13:25 13:27 lipped about some of his
13:27 13:29 positions on his second day on the job
13:29 13:31 speaker Mike Johnson continued to dodge
13:31 13:33 questions about his efforts to overturn
13:33 13:36 the 2020 election do you believe the
13:36 13:39 2020 election was stolen sir just yes or
13:39 13:41 no after the election Johnson in
13:41 13:43 coordination with then president Donald
13:43 13:45 Trump recruited more than 100
13:45 13:47 Republicans to sign on to a brief
13:47 13:49 supporting a lawsuit to overturn the
13:49 13:51 results he also promoted conspiracy
13:51 13:53 theories about rig voting machine
13:53 13:56 software in a radio interview when you
13:56 13:58 have you know a software system that is
13:58 13:59 used all around the country country that
13:59 14:01 is suspect because it came from Hugo
14:01 14:03 Chavez's Venezuela Democrats are
14:03 14:05 concerned Johnson could again try to
14:05 14:07 block certification of the Electoral
14:07 14:09 College results next year if President
14:09 14:12 Biden wins again his track
14:12 14:14 record with respect to trying to
14:14 14:16 overturn the results of the 2020
14:16 14:20 election speaks for itself Johnson's
14:20 14:22 opponents are also singling out his
14:22 14:24 views on abortion right there is no
14:24 14:26 right to abortion in the Constitution
14:26 14:28 period before entering office Johnson
14:28 14:30 called abortion a holocaust that has
14:30 14:33 been repeated every day for 32 years
14:33 14:36 since 1973's Row versus Wade as a
14:36 14:38 congressman he's co-sponsored at least
14:38 14:40 three bills that would ban the procedure
14:40 14:43 Nationwide do you intend to pursue a
14:43 14:46 National Abortion ban a speaker sir but
14:46 14:48 he had nothing to say today about how he
14:48 14:51 will govern going forward Johnson is
14:51 14:54 also staunchly anti-gay right in 2004 he
14:54 14:56 called homosexuality inherently
14:56 14:59 unnatural and voted against legal izing
14:59 15:01 same-sex marriage moderate Republicans
15:01 15:03 argue that despite views they may
15:03 15:05 disagree with he'll be an efficient
15:05 15:08 speaker and he recognizes the need that
15:08 15:10 irrespective of Prior positions he's
15:10 15:12 going to have to weave us together uh
15:12 15:14 towards a common goal several Republican
15:14 15:16 lawmakers told us they don't think
15:16 15:18 speaker Johnson will inject his personal
15:18 15:20 views into his new role for his part
15:20 15:22 Johnson also expressed a willingness to
15:22 15:24 work across the aisle calling his
15:24 15:26 meeting today with President Biden
15:26 15:29 productive Adriana Nicole I thank you
15:29 15:31 the US military the US military has
15:31 15:34 released video of yet another Chinese
15:34 15:36 fighter jet harassing and flying
15:36 15:39 dangerously close to a US military plane
15:39 15:41 officials say this happened Tuesday over
15:41 15:43 the South China Sea the Chinese jet
15:43 15:47 coming within 10 ft of the American B52
15:47 15:49 the Pentagon says the Chinese military
15:49 15:51 has made similar Reckless Maneuvers on
15:51 15:55 us planes more than 180 times in the
15:55 15:57 past 2 years China claims most of the
15:57 16:00 sea as there but the US says it's
16:00 16:02 international
16:02 16:04 waters finally a breakthrough in the
16:04 16:07 auto worker strike thousands are heading
16:07 16:09 back to work at one of the big three
16:09 16:12 automakers but what about the others
16:12 16:15 that's
16:15 16:18 next thousands of Auto Workers are
16:18 16:20 returning to Ford plants after their
16:20 16:21 Union reached a tentative contract
16:21 16:24 agreement to end the six- week old
16:24 16:26 strike the deal which still has to be
16:26 16:28 approved by union members includes a 25
16:28 16:31 5% pay raise over a 4 and a half years
16:31 16:34 Ford says today that it's lost $1.3
16:34 16:37 billion in production thousands more
16:37 16:39 workers remain on strike at General
16:39 16:42 Motors and stellantis as those talks
16:42 16:44 continue a man suspected of killing a
16:44 16:47 Maryland judge last week was found dead
16:47 16:49 today in a wooded area about a mile from
16:49 16:52 his abandoned SUV investigators believe
16:52 16:54 he was angry about losing custody of his
16:54 16:56 kids when he allegedly shot and killed
16:56 17:03 the judge who presided over the divorce
17:03 17:06 case finally tonight this small city of
17:06 17:09 Leon Maine is home to fewer than 40,000
17:09 17:11 people it's the kind of place where you
17:11 17:13 know your neighbors and see friends just
17:13 17:16 walking down the street but no one can
17:16 17:18 understand why it now joins a list of
17:18 17:21 American cities forever linked by the
17:21 17:23 tragedy of a mass
17:23 17:26 shooting just weeks ago one survey named
17:26 17:30 Lewiston America's third safest city
17:30 17:32 it's a former miltown now home to
17:32 17:34 colleges and Health Care Systems it
17:34 17:37 hosts an annual balloon festival and a
17:37 17:40 liberty Festival on July 4th and it's
17:40 17:42 where children gathered on a Wednesday
17:42 17:45 night at a bowling alley children and a
17:45 17:48 community whose lives are now forever
17:48 17:51 changed Governor Janet Mills says
17:51 17:53 Lewiston is a city with a big heart and
17:53 17:56 she knows it well it's where she met her
17:56 17:58 husband and got married I I know it's
17:58 18:01 hard for us to think about healing when
18:01 18:04 our hearts are broken let us wrap our
18:04 18:08 arms around one another offer comfort
18:08 18:12 and Solace and
18:12 18:16 love and it's what will continue to do
18:16 18:17 until something
18:17 18:20 changes that's tonight's CBS Evening

3:07 3:10 Massacre yeah have an active shooter we
3:10 3:12 have multiple injuries gunfire rang out
3:12 3:15 shortly before 700 p.m. Wednesday at

3:20 3:23 Maine seven people were killed a witness
3:23 3:26 described the chaos I just booked it um
3:26 3:29 down the lane and I slid basically in
3:29 3:31 the pins are and climbed up in the
3:31 3:32 machine and was on top of the machines
3:32 3:34 for about 10 minutes until the cops got
3:34 3:37 there minutes later at 7:08 p.m. frantic
3:37 3:40 911 calls began streaming in with
3:40 3:42 reports of an active shooter at shang's

3:48 3:49 dozen people were injured in both
3:49 3:52 shootings three victims later died at
3:52 3:54 the hospital we had approximately 100

8:21 8:24 it cbs's aleny Hano is learning more
