2:43 2:44 Jordan's foreign minister warned that

3:02 3:05 there good evening Nora we're just less
3:05 3:07 than a mile from the border with Gaza
3:07 3:09 and there have been explosions here
3:09 3:11 pretty much all night the constant sound
3:11 3:14 of jets and drones explosions off in the
3:14 3:17 distance even after weeks of air strikes
3:17 3:19 what happened tonight and continues to
3:19 3:22 happen is on another level Israeli tanks
3:22 3:24 have crossed into Gaza Hamas says
3:24 3:26 they're fighting on two locations as you
3:26 3:28 said uh in terms of scale uh us
3:28 3:30 officials tell CBS new this appears to
3:30 3:35 be a rolling start to the ground
3:35 3:38 defensive the skyline over Gaza City lit
3:38 3:41 up in the most ferocious and sustained
3:41 3:44 bombardment the territory has seen since
3:44 3:46 the Israeli military Unleashed its
3:46 3:48 aerial assault on Hamas militants nearly
3:48 3:51 3 weeks ago whether the series of
3:51 3:54 powerful explosions was the precursor to
3:54 3:56 the major ground Invasion the Israeli
3:56 3:58 Defense Forces would only say ground
3:58 4:02 operations were expanding tonight
4:02 4:05 warning residents of Gaza City to seek
4:05 4:07 safer conditions that the IDF would
4:07 4:10 persist in its attacks on the City and
4:10 4:11 surrounding
4:11 4:14 areas this is said to show the impact of
4:14 4:18 the bombardment from inside Gaza itself
4:18 4:20 tonight Telecom firms reported that the
4:20 4:23 internet and cell phone services were
4:23 4:26 cut off across the Palestinian
4:26 4:29 territory today's heavy bombardment
4:29 4:31 follows those two nights of raids as
4:31 4:34 Israeli troops went on the offensive by
4:34 4:36 land and
4:36 4:40 sea the IDF released this video set to
4:40 4:42 show a naval Commando unit conducting a
4:42 4:45 raid on what it called a Hamas terrorist
4:45 4:47 infrastructure apparently reaching the
4:47 4:50 shore at one point and engaging in
4:50 4:52 ferocious
4:52 4:55 firefights that coincided with another
4:55 4:57 nighttime ground attack this video
4:57 4:59 claiming to show Israeli tanks rolling
4:59 5:01 AC crossed a border artillery and
5:01 5:03 aircraft striking anti-tank missile
5:03 5:06 launchers and an operational
5:06 5:08 headquarters the full force of Israeli
5:08 5:11 air strikes dropping whole city blocks
5:11 5:14 one of 250 targets the IDF said they
5:14 5:16 attacked claiming their aim is the
5:16 5:20 destruction of terrorist tunnels Hamas
5:20 5:23 also striking back sending a volley of
5:23 5:26 rockets into Israel some of which got
5:26 5:28 through the country's Iron Dome missile
5:28 5:31 defense system even hitting Tel Aviv
5:31 5:34 resulting in a few injuries whether or
5:34 5:36 not a fullscale Invasion has begun
5:36 5:38 tonight Israel says it remains committed
5:38 5:41 to returning hostages held in Gaza
5:41 5:45 during almost 3 weeks of
5:45 5:48 warfare and Charlie Daga is back with us
5:48 5:50 and we can hear some of those air
5:50 5:52 strikes and bombing near where you are
5:52 5:54 so Charlie what are you hear hearing
5:54 5:56 from the Israeli government
5:56 5:59 tonight yes Anor a senior advisor to the
5:59 6:02 Prime Minister said tonight this isn't
6:02 6:04 just another round of fighting Hamas
6:04 6:07 will pay for its crimes against humanity
6:07 6:10 and tonight we're starting that payback
6:10 6:13 in his words Hamas will feel our wrath
6:13 6:17 tonight Nora Charlie Daga in
6:17 6:19 STO well tonight the UN General Assembly
6:19 6:21 adopted a resolution calling for
6:21 6:24 humanitarian truce in Gaza 45 countries
6:24 6:27 abstained 14 countries voted against it
6:27 6:29 including the United States Israel says
6:29 6:32 a pause or ceasefire would only benefit
6:32 6:35 Hamas CBS Deborah Pata reports on the
6:35 6:37 crisis in
6:37 6:40 Gaza it's hard to imagine just how bad
6:40 6:42 things could get when already for the
6:42 6:46 past 3 weeks the images have shown one
6:46 6:48 hellscape after
6:48 6:52 another Gaza is fast running out of fuel
6:52 6:53 water and
6:53 6:56 medicine today 10 Aid trucks crossed
6:56 6:59 into the territory a drop in the ocean
6:59 7:02 compared to the 500 that used to enter
7:02 7:04 Gaza every single
7:04 7:07 day the United Nations now warning of
7:07 7:10 possible war crimes saying it's deeply
7:10 7:12 concerned about the collective
7:12 7:14 punishment of the people of Gaza
7:14 7:17 following the atrocious attack by Hamas
7:17 7:20 which it's also labeled a war crime
7:20 7:23 massive destruction our CBS producer
7:23 7:25 marn Al Gul who's been reporting from
7:25 7:29 inside Gaza since October 7 sent us this
7:29 7:30 message
7:30 7:33 more death and more victims everybody
7:33 7:36 knows that this area is high population
7:36 7:39 maybe the most high population in all
7:39 7:40 over the
7:40 7:43 world day after day Israel's bombardment
7:43 7:47 of Gaza has been Relentless amidst the
7:47 7:50 Ash and the dust gut-wrenching grief is
7:50 7:53 everywhere this man lost his wife and
7:53 7:56 four children the grief so Roar as he
7:56 7:59 rocks his baby boy who is just two and a
7:59 8:01 half months
8:01 8:05 old what did he do he wailes did he kill
8:05 8:07 anyone did he kidnap
8:07 8:10 someone there are
8:10 8:14 229 men women and children still being
8:14 8:17 held hostage inside Gaza Hamas has
8:17 8:19 claimed 50 have already been killed in
8:19 8:23 Israeli War strikes a claim we cannot
8:23 8:26 independently
8:26 8:29 verify but tonight Nora as this war
8:29 8:32 intensifies those hostages could be in
8:32 8:35 even more danger than they were
8:35 8:39 yesterday Deborah P thank you Israel's
8:39 8:41 defense minister said today that his
8:41 8:42 country expects the ground offensive in
8:42 8:45 Gaza will be long and difficult given
8:45 8:47 the vast network of tunnels used by
8:47 8:49 Hamas cbs's David Martin is at the
8:49 8:51 Pentagon tonight with more on Israel's
8:51 8:53 military objectives and the challenges
8:53 8:57 it will face tonight's Israeli artillery
8:57 8:59 barrage began what US officials say
8:59 9:01 appears to be a rolling start to the
9:01 9:04 ground invasion of Gaza Israeli ground
9:04 9:07 forces have crossed into Gaza before but
9:07 9:09 only on raids pulling out at the end of
9:09 9:12 the night a rolling start is different
9:12 9:14 and retired General Frank McKenzie
9:14 9:16 former commander of US troops in the
9:16 9:18 Middle East explains how it works I
9:18 9:20 think a rolling start will be an
9:20 9:22 operation where you put in
9:22 9:25 reconnaissance forces you sort of gain a
9:25 9:27 feel for the battlefield and then pull
9:27 9:30 your main forces in behind the Pentagon
9:30 9:32 had sent a Marine General experienced in
9:32 9:34 Special Operations in urban combat to
9:34 9:38 advise the Israelis on how to do it he
9:38 9:40 has now left Israel they'll probably
9:40 9:42 have several lines of Advance going into
9:42 9:44 Gaza and Israeli commanders will see
9:44 9:47 where they're having success the axom is
9:47 9:49 you reinforce success where you're
9:49 9:52 gaining ground you put more forces in
9:52 9:53 behind it it sounds sort of like
9:53 9:56 establishing Beach heads inside Gaza you
9:56 9:58 should think of it as multiple Beach
9:58 10:01 heads all all across uh all across the
10:01 10:03 front and in the underground tunnels
10:03 10:05 which Hamas could blow up under the feet
10:05 10:07 of Israeli soldiers and make block by
10:07 10:09 block fighting even more
10:09 10:12 hellacious civilians already suffering
10:12 10:14 under the crushing weight of Israeli
10:14 10:17 bombs will be trapped in the middle used
10:17 10:20 as human Shields by Hamas and seen as
10:20 10:22 potential threats by the
10:22 10:25 Israelis and David Martin joins us now
10:25 10:26 from the Pentagon so David I do want to
10:26 10:28 ask you about the US troops who have
10:28 10:30 been Target Ed in the Middle East I
10:30 10:32 understand that the US launched some
10:32 10:34 retaliatory strikes what can you tell us
10:34 10:38 about that that's right Nora U f-16s
10:38 10:42 American Air Force f-16s bombed uh two
10:42 10:46 Iranian weapons Depots in uh Syria and
10:46 10:49 it was designed as sending a message to
10:49 10:51 Iran to tell these militias that have
10:51 10:54 been attacking American troops to back
10:54 10:57 off since that attack there has been one
10:57 10:59 more attack on American troops but the
10:59 11:02 Drone was intercepted and no reports of
11:02 11:04 casualties David Martin thank you very
11:04 11:06 much let's bring in Face the Nation
11:06 11:07 moderator and CBS News Chief Foreign
11:07 11:09 Affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan
11:09 11:11 Margaret good to have you here let's
11:11 11:13 talk about those hostages how does this
11:13 11:15 complicate their release it makes it far
11:15 11:17 more complex Nora as recently as this
11:17 11:19 morning there had been optimism that
11:19 11:22 with humanitarian Aid going into Gaza
11:22 11:24 hostages might be coming out but that
11:24 11:26 deal fell apart in addition to the
11:26 11:29 hostages there are also 5 to 600 US
11:29 11:31 citizens in Gaza and how do you think
11:31 11:34 this changes the whole political dynamic
11:34 11:36 in the Middle East now that this uh
11:36 11:38 latest ground operation is starting to
11:38 11:41 expand well the escalation means that
11:41 11:43 there could be Israeli military
11:43 11:45 casualties that will affect the
11:45 11:47 Netanyahu government's choices already
11:47 11:49 in recent weeks the president of the
11:49 11:50 United States has been pressing
11:50 11:52 Netanyahu to think about things like
11:52 11:55 defining success and who will next
11:55 11:57 govern the 2 million people of Gaza
11:57 12:00 meanwhile in Arab countries these
12:00 12:03 Palestinian civilian casualties which
12:03 12:06 are so hard to see are causing an uproar
12:06 12:08 even among some of America's Partners
12:08 12:10 like Jordan the King of Jordan came out
12:10 12:12 and said it creates a dangerous
12:12 12:14 perception that Arab lives are less
12:14 12:16 valuable than Israeli lives now
12:16 12:17 President Biden said the death of
12:17 12:19 innocence is a regrettable cost of War
12:19 12:23 he did on Wednesday say uh extremist
12:23 12:25 settlers need to stop attacking
12:25 12:26 Palestinians in the West Bank but
12:26 12:28 there's the perception here that the US
12:28 12:31 has backed Israel and that means
12:31 12:32 Americans could be targets it's why the
12:32 12:35 state department has drawn down its
12:35 12:37 Presence at some embassies and tonight
12:37 12:39 Nora is telling Americans in Lebanon to
12:39 12:41 get out now while there are still
12:41 12:44 flights it's a very delicate situation
12:44 12:47 Marg Brennan thank you very much now to
12:47 12:49 some breaking news with the multi-state
12:49 12:51 Manhunt coming to an end for the man
12:51 12:53 accused of killing 18 people and
12:53 12:55 injuring more than a dozen others in
12:55 12:57 Maine cbs's Jerica Duncan is there with
12:57 12:59 the late breaking detail including the

13:47 13:50 manager at shi's bar and grill a witness
13:50 13:52 told her he confronted the shooter they
13:52 13:54 told us that my husband went to the
13:54 13:57 kitchen and grabbed a but and knife and
13:57 13:59 went after him to
13:59 14:01 save the patrons that were in his
14:01 14:04 establishment but Walker was shot in the
14:04 14:06 stomach and later died he wouldn't want
14:06 14:09 to go out any other way that's exactly
14:09 14:10 who he is as a man he' give you the
14:10 14:13 shirt off his back he's a hero and he
14:13 14:15 died protecting and that's who he is
14:15 14:18 hundreds of federal state and local Law
14:18 14:20 Enforcement Officers work to process
14:20 14:22 every inch of the two crime scenes for
14:22 14:25 evidence and motive CBS News has
14:25 14:27 confirmed that a letter card left at his
14:27 14:29 home in Maine is being described as a
14:29 14:32 possible suicide note addressed to his
14:32 14:35 son when you heard about his background
14:35 14:37 and that there were red flags regarding
14:37 14:40 his behavior his mental health he said
14:40 14:43 he wanted to harm people at that point
14:43 14:45 they should have went in and removed his
14:45 14:47 Weaponry do you think the system failed
14:47 14:49 you all yes yep I think it it's been
14:49 14:51 failing the whole country yeah this
14:51 14:55 keeps happening nothing is being
14:55 14:58 done the Walker family told me that once
14:58 15:00 they saw the picture of card on
15:00 15:03 television they recognized him Nora they
15:03 15:05 said he had been at that bar before
15:05 15:08 where the shooting happened to play
15:08 15:11 cornhole oh Jerica thinking of those
15:11 15:12 families thank you for that powerful
15:12 15:15 interview tonight CBS News has learned
15:15 15:16 new details about the investigation
15:16 15:18 including what may have set the suspect
15:18 15:21 off cbs's Jeff pagay reports on what we
15:21 15:24 know CBS News has learned from a law
15:24 15:26 enforcement source that an assault style
15:26 15:29 firearm recovered from Robert card's
15:29 15:32 abandoned vehicle was legally purchased

15:34 15:38 determine if it is the same gun used in
15:38 15:40 the massacre every one of those rounds
15:40 15:42 that got fired need to be investigated
15:42 15:43 every one of those cartridges that lays
15:43 15:45 on the ground needs to be collected
15:45 15:48 investigators also located Card's cell
15:48 15:51 phone they will try to crack it and pour
15:51 15:53 over his online activity including text
15:53 15:57 messages and emails hoping to find clues
15:57 16:00 in July officially say card an army
16:00 16:03 reservice for 21 years was admitted for
16:03 16:05 psychiatric treatment for 2 weeks after

16:10 16:12 voices tonight we've learned that

16:14 16:16 firearms from the suspect's home in
